PULLMAN, Wash. – Freshman Guzal Yusupova provided the Cougars lone victory in a 6-1 loss against No. 20 UCLA Sunday at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
 
With the loss, the Cougars fall to 9-10 on the season, 0-5 in conference play. UCLA improves to 10-5, 4-1.
 
The win by Yusupova, a hard-fought, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Terri Fleming at No. 2, improved her season dual match record to a team-best 13-3, including 3-0 in Pac-12 play. She has won six straight, is unbeaten in her last nine matches, and became the first Cougar to defeat both USC and UCLA in the same season since Nora Gaal accomplished the feat in 2002.
 
UCLA captured the doubles point to open the day behind close wins at No. 1 and No. 3. At No. 3, the Buin duo of Ena Shibahara and Kristin Wiley rode a break of serve to a 6-3 win over WSU's Yusupova and Ege Tomey. At No. 1, the Bruins' 22nd-ranked pair of Jada Hart and Terri Fleming fought off a late charge from WSU's Aneta Miksovska and Victoria Matejevic to pull out the 6-4 win, clinching the doubles point. At No. 2, WSU's Barbora Michalkova and Melisa Ates were tied 5-5 against UCLA's Gabby Andrews and Alaina Miller, ranked No. 67 nationally.
 
In singles play, UCLA captured the first match when Shibahara, ranked No. 3 nationally, went back-and-forth with Michalkova before coming away with a 6-4, 6-1 win, pushing the Bruin lead to 2-0.
 
At No. 4, UCLA's Jada Hart, ranked No. 88 nationally, posted a  6-2, 6-1 win over Matejevic, putting UCLA within one win of the team victory. That win came at No. 3 when Miller pulled out a second-set tiebreaker for a 6-3, 7-6 (2) win.
 
At No. 5, UCLA's Smith pulled out two close sets for a 6-3, 6-4 win over Ates while Wiley at No. 6 saved two match points as she defeated Colic, 6-1, 3-6 1-0 (11-9), playing a 10-point tiebreaker for the third set.
 
The Cougars are next in action Friday when they host No. 42 Arizona State at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts. Match time is set for 1:30 p.m.
