Cougar Tennis Travels to Bay Area

THIS WEEK: The Washington State women's tennis team continues returns to the road as it faces Santa Clara, No. 10 Stanford and No. 16 California this week. The Cougars will play a pair of matches Friday, April 14, first at Santa Clara at 9 a.m. followed by a 1:30 contest against Stanford, Friday, April 7 at 1:30 p.m. The following day the Cougars travel across the bay to face No. 16 California at Noon. The Cougars enter the week with a 9-12 overall record, 0-7 in Pac-12 play. Santa Clara enters the match with a 7-9 overall record while Stanford, ranked No. 10 nationally, begins the week 15-2 overall and sits atop the Pac-12 standings at 7-0. California enters the week 13-3 overall, 6-1 in conference action. The Golden Bears will host No. 32 Washington Friday before the meeting with WSU.

WASHINGTON STATE/SANTA CLARA HISTORY: The Cougars hold a 7-1 advantage over Santa Clara in the all-time series. The last meeting came during the 2011 season, a 4-3 Cougar victory in Pullman. The match against Santa Clara was a late addition to the Cougar Tennis schedule.

 

WASHINGTON STATE/STANFORD HISTORY: The Cougars are looking for their first win against Stanford in 22 all-time matchups. Last season Stanford, the 2016 NCAA Champion, came away with a 5-2 victory in Pullman.  The Cardinal lineup boasts six players with national singles rankings: No. 20 Melissa Lord; No. 45 Taylor Davidson; No. 54 Carolina Doyle; No. 63 Emma Higuchi; No. 68 Caroline Lampl and No. 108 Emily Arbuthnott. The Cardinal also have two doubles teams in the national rankings: No. 40 Lord/Doyle and No. 67 Davidson/Arbuthnott.

 

WASHINGTON STATE/CALIFORNIA HISTORY: California leads the all-time series, 19-1 with the Cougars' lone victory coming during the 2002 season, a 5-2 win in Pullman. Last season the Golden Bears captured a 6-1 win in Pullman. California enters this year's match with three players ranked nationally in singles: No. 12 Karla Popovic; No. 65 Maegan Manasse and No. 104 Olivia Hauger. The Golden Bears also have two ranked doubles teams: No. 51 Manasse and Maya Jansen, along with No. 75 Alexis Nelson and Denise Starr.  

 

UP NEXT: The Cougars conclude their regular season schedule when they host No. 32 Washington at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts, Saturday, April 22 at noon. It will be Senior Day for Cougar Tennis, with WSU's lone senior, Victoria Matejevic, being recognized prior to the match.

LAST TIME OUT: The Cougars dropped a 4-3 contest against Arizona. After falling behind 3-0, WUS captured three-straight singles matches to even the match. In the end they fell one win shy as Arizona captured a come-from-behind, three-set win at No. 6 to secure the win.

 

YUSUPOVA CONTINUES STRONG FRESHMAN SEASON: Freshman Guzal Yusupova has been playing her best tennis of the season over the past month, and been the Cougars' most productive player during the span. She boats a 14-4 dual match record this season, including a 5-1 record in Pac-12 play at the No. 2 spot. Over her last 10 matches she is 6-1 (three were stopped once the team outcome was decided), including wins over USC and UCLA two weeks ago, the first Cougar player to defeat both Los Angeles schools in the same weekend since 2002

ANETA MIKSOVSKA RETURNS TO FORM: Sophomore team captain Aneta Miksovska had her best weekend of the season last week, picking up a pair of wins against nationally ranked players. The sophomore from Stramberk, Czech Republic, began by defeating No. 88 Kelley Anderson of Arizona State rallying form a set down to win in three. She followed that with another three-set victory, this time against Paris Corley or Arizona, ranked No. 113. The wins were the first against ranked players in Miksovska's WSU career and improved her season record to 18-9. Last season she completed her freshman year with a 31-11 singles record, tying the freshman single-season record for wins and tying for the fifth-most wins in a season at WSU.

ROSTER BREAKDOWN: For the 2017 season, the Cougars will boast a lineup that features four freshmen, one senior, one junior and a sophomore. The returning roster includes senior Victoria Matejevic, junior Barbora Michalkova, sophomore Aneta Miksovska, and freshmen Melisa Ates, Lejla Colic, Ege Tomey and Guzal Yusupova.

COACH HART: Lisa Hart is in her 14th season as the head coach of Washington State. Hart has accumulated a 180-166 record, the win total being the most of any coach in WSU tennis history.
