Colorado Edges Past Washington State

BOULDER, Colo. – Colorado's Brigitte Beck rallied for a three-set victory at No. 6 singles to lift Colorado past Washington State, 4-3, in a Pac-12 Conference tennis match Friday at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center.

With the loss the Cougars fall to 9-7, 0-2 in Pac-12 play while Colorado improves to 8-6 overall, 1-2 in conference action.

With the match tied 3-3, Beck and WSU's Ege Tomey battled into the third set. With the set tied at 3-3, Beck gained a break of serve then held on for a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win, sealing the team victory.

The day began with doubles play where all three matches went back and forth. At No. 1, the Colorado duo of Louise Ronaldson and Chloe Hule broke a 3-3 tie en route to a 6-3 win to give the Buffs an early advantage. The Cougar pair of Guzal Yusupova and Ege, playing together for the first time this season, rallied from 0-3 down for a 6-4 victory at No. 3, evening the match. At No. 2, the Cougars' Barbora Michalkova and Melisa Ates held a 5-4 lead but could not close out the match as Colorado's Nuria Ormeno-Ruiz and Kyra Wojcik captured the final three games to secure the doubles point.

Colorado upped its lead to 2-0 as Ormeno-Ruiz captured a first-set tiebreaker to propel her past Michalkova at No. 1, 7-6, 6-2. Yusupova put the Cougars on the scoreboard and she recorded a straight-set, 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 over Ronaldson. The win was the fourth straight for the Cougar freshman dating back to Feb. 19 and improved her season dual match record to 10-3.

WSU tied the match at 2-2 when Miksovska defeated Andrinopoulos, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 3. The cougars grabbed the lead when Matejevic cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 win over Chloe Hule at No. 4. The win snapped a five-match losing streak for the WSU senior.

The Cougars conclude their trip through the Mountain schools when they face Utah, Sunday at 10 a.m. PT, in Salt Lake City.
