Cougars Fall to Oregon, 4-0

PULLMAN, Wash. – The University of Oregon captured the first three singles matches completed en route to a 4-0 victory over Washington State Sunday morning at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
 
With the loss the Cougars fall to 9-4, 0-1 in Pac-12 play, while Oregon improves to 8-5, 2-0.
 
Oregon captured the opening doubles point by taking two of three matches. At No. 1, the Duck pair of Shweta Sangwan and Alyssa Tobita posted a 6-2 win over Barbora Michalkova and Victoria Matejevic. WSU took a win at No. 3 doubles as Melisa Ates and Guzal Yusupova jumped out early the cruised to a 6-3 win over Nia Rose and Daniela Nasser, meaning the doubles point came down to No. 2. After going back and forth, the Ducks' Marlou Kluiving and Julia Eshet rode a late break of serve to a 6-3 win over Aneta Miksovska and Lejla Colic.
 
In singles play the Ducks pushed the lead to 2-0 as Tobita completed a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Michalkova at No. 2. At No. 3, Rose drew Oregon one point closer as she posted a 6-0, 7-5 win over Miksovska. The Cougar sophomore saved five match points but could not find a sixth as she was broken in the final game.
 
At No. 4 singles, Ates and Eshet split the first two sets, with each winning 6-1. The third set came down to a tiebreaker after Ates could not capitalize on three different match points. After leading 4-2 in the breaker, Eshet rallied to win five of the final six points for the 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) victory, clinching the team victory for the Ducks.
 
With the win in hand, the three remaining matches on court were stopped. At No. 1 Yusupova was one point away from victory as she was leading Sangwan 6-4, 4-6, 5-1, 40-30 in the game. At No. 5 Matejevic was just starting a third set against Kluiving, winning the first 6-3 and dropping the second 6-1. At No. 6, Colic was on serve at 3-4 against Nasser.
 
The Cougars begin a two-match trip in Las Vegas when they face No. 11 Oklahoma State Monday at 10:30 p.m.
