Cougars Set for Kansas State, North Texas

THIS WEEK: The Washington State women's tennis team returns to the road for the third time in four weeks to face Kansas State and North Texas, both in Denton, Texas. The Kansas State match will take place Saturday, Feb. 18 at 9 a.m. PT, while the North Texas match will be the following day at 10 a.m. PT. The Cougars enter the weekend with a 6-2 record, while Kansas State is 4-3 and North Texas 2-4. Kansas State and North Texas will play Friday.

KANSAS STATE/NORTH TEXAS HISTORY: The Cougars hold a 5-1 edge all-time against Kansas State, including a 5-2 last season in Pullman. Against North Texas, WSU is 1-1 all-time, capturing their lone win last season with a 6-1 victory in Pullman.  

 

UP NEXT: The Cougars return to Pullman for the first time since Jan. 21 when they host Fresno State and Idaho. The Fresno State match will be Saturday, Feb. 25 at 11 a.m. with the Idaho contest Sunday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.

LAST TIME OUT: The Cougars split their two matches in Indiana, falling 6-1 at Purdue before rebounding with a 4-0 victory at Indiana. In the Purdue match Barbora Michalkova picked up the lone victory while Guzal Yusupova, Melisa Ates and Ege Tomey all earned singles victories against Indiana.

2017 QUICK NOTES:

·         Junior Barbora Michalkova's victory over No. 87 Yuliya Shupenia was her first against a nationally-ranked player

·         Freshman Ege Tomey saw her nine-match winning streak snapped in a loss against Dartmouth's Chuyang Guan

·         Sophomore Aneta Miksovska was the only Cougar to win both matches two weeks ago against DePaul and Dartmouth, improving her season record to a team-best 13-4

·         Freshman Melisa Ates is 8-3 since January 1, with all three losses coming in three sets

 

ROSTER BREAKDOWN: For the 2017 season the Cougars will boast a lineup that features four freshmen, one senior, one junior and a sophomore. The returning roster includes senior Victoria Matejevic, junior Barbora Michalkova, sophomore Aneta Miksovska, and freshmen Melisa Ates, Lejla Colic, Ege Tomey and Guzal Yusupova.

LAST SEASON IN REVIEW: Washington State finished off dual match play with a 17-9 overall record in 2016. The Cougars finished ninth in a competitive Pac-12 conference that had the top ten teams finishing with national rankings. WSU started the season nationally ranked at No.57 and reached a high of No.40 during the season. Departed from last year's squad is Maria Biryukova (30-15 singles record), Trang Huynh (30-15), Lize Leenknecht (19-12), Donika Bashota (36-8) and Holly Monahan (6-7).

COACH HART: Lisa Hart is in her 14th season as the head coach of Washington State. Hart has accumulated a 177-156 record, the wins total being the most of any coach in WSU tennis history. In 2012, the Cougars went 19-7 as Hart was awarded the Pac-12 Conference Women's Tennis Coach of the Year award.
