Volleyball Drops Four-set Match at Cal

WHO WHAT WHEN WHERE…
BERKELEY, Calif. -- Taylor Mims had 20 kills and Casey Schoenlein had 16 kills, which were match-highs, but the Washington State volleyball team (13-8 overall, 2-7 in Pac-12) fell to California (12-8, 3-6) in scores of 25-19, 22-25, 25-20, and 25-21 at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley Friday night.
Mims had a double-double with 10 digs to go with her 20 kills (.224) and had four blocks. Schoenlein's 16 kills came on 35 attacks with zero errors for a season-high .457 hitting percentage. Penny Tusa also had a double-double with 22 assists and 11 digs, had two blocks and served two aces. Claire Martin had nine kills (.389) and three blocks while Ella Lajos added eight kills (.467) and four blocks. Jocelyn Urias also had four blocks as the Cougars won the blocking battle nine to six. Ashley Brown had 18 assists and Alexis Dirige led the team with 19 digs.
The Cougars out-hit the Golden Bears 55 to 53 with a better team hitting percentage of .248 to Cal's .245. Cal had 63 digs to WSU's 54 and the home team tallied eight aces with five serving errors while WSU had three aces with 13 errors. Both teams scored 67 points.
WHY & HOW...
WSU Head Coach Jen Greeny said, "I think serving errors is definitely what hurt us tonight. We had 13 service errors and right when we were starting to get some momentum back, we'd miss our serve. We just can't do this in this conference. I thought we had some good production from Casey Schoenlein: she was great tonight. But we have to have more players step up and we just can't make those kind of errors down the stretch."
"Cal runs a slower offense with really high balls to the pins and I don't think our block really go going like I think it should have. Their hitting numbers were much too high and we have to be able to make better adjustments."
