WSU Rowing Heads North to Spokane

WSU women's rowing will compete in the Head of the Spokane against Gonzaga, Saturday, Oct. 14.

WSU Rowing Heads North to Spokane: The Washington State University women's rowing team is making the short trek north to Spokane, to compete in the Head of the Spokane against Gonzaga, Saturday, Oct. 14…the regatta starts at 9 a.m.

The 2017 Head of the Spokane: Racing is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., Saturday at the Gonzaga Boathouse on the Spokane River...the race is in head format, in which the boats start at intervals, racing both the clock and each other...the Head of the Spokane is hosted by the Gonzaga rowing team...the race covers a 5,000-meter stretch of the Spokane River.

Last Year at the Head of the Spokane: The Cougars' varsity four 'A' won the first flight, recording a time of 15:49; 13 seconds faster than varsity four 'B' who took second, and 14 seconds ahead of the Gonzaga third varsity eight...WSU raced three other varsity boats in the event, and they all finished consecutively after Gonzaga's third varsity eight...the WSU varsity eight finished with the best time of the day recording a time of 14:39; a full 10 seconds ahead of Gonzaga's varsity eight who finished at 14:49...the Cougars' second varsity eight had a strong showing placing third having finished the 5,000-meter course at 15:25, topping the Bulldogs' second varsity eight by 13 seconds...WSU also raced three novice eights, with the first novice eight crew finishing at a time of 18:30...Gonzaga's novice eight came in with a time of 18:05.

WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere on the Head of the Spokane: "We've gotten some good race experience in so far this fall. Now we get to go back to Gonzaga, we raced them earlier in pairs. There's a lot of fan support, both for Gonzaga and for us in Spokane. This time, the race finishes right in front of the boathouse, so you can kind of observe some of the stuff going on."

Last Time on the Water: WSU placed three pairs in the final 250-meter sprint at the Burnaby Lake Small Boat Invitational, and senior Emily Thomson and sophomore Ivy Elling Quaintance won the title of Regatta Champions by winning the sprint, Saturday... Thomson and Elling Quaintance came in fourth in the pair flight of the head race, completing the course at 16:37.77... senior Kristel Tohu and junior Paige Danielson also advanced to the final sprint after finishing fifth with a time of 16:40.02... seniors Emily Morrow and Lucie Weissova also advanced after placing sixth with a time of 16:52.86. They did not compete in the sprint due to sickness. Instead, sophomore Kamila Ondrackova and freshman Linnea Davison, who finished seventh at 17:08.42 went on to compete instead... Thomson and Elling Quaintance went on to win the 250-meter sprint in front of the Burnaby Lake Rowing Club's old grandstand with a time of 51.47, Ondrackova and Davison placed third, while Tohu and Danielson finished sixth.

Coaching Staff: Jane LaRiviere begins her 16th year as head coach of the WSU women's rowing program...as a team, the Cougars have raced in 11 NCAA Championships under LaRiviere...she is joined by associate head coach Karl Huhta, assistant/novice coach Brandon Campbell and assistant coach Sarah Monn...Huhta is in his fourth year with the Cougars, and first year as associate head coach… Campbell is entering his third year, after spending his last two as a graduate assistant… Monn comes in for her first year with the Cougars.

Next up for the Cougars: WSU will close its fall season Sunday, Nov. 6 at the Head of the Lake, hosted by cross-state rival Washington.
