Cougars Conclude Play at Hawaii Spring Invitational

LAHAINA, Hawaii – Washington State tennis picked up four singles victories Saturday to conclude play at the Hawaii Spring Invitational at the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch on the island of Maui.
 
The three-team non-scoring tournament, featuring host Hawaii, Washington State and Kansas, consists of singles and doubles matches each day. Opening the afternoon with doubles, WSU captured one victory in three matches. Freshmen Melisa Ates and Ege Tomey had little trouble with Hawaii's Saga Shermis and Sophia Storch, winning 6-1. WSU's Barbora Michalkova and Guzal Yusupova dropped a 7-6 decision to Kansas' Maria Toran Ribes and Tatiana Nikolaeva while Aneta Miksovska and Lejla Colic fell to Hawaii's Cindy Nguyen and Klara Pribylova, 6-1.
 
In singles action, WSU captured four of seven matches. Miksovska prevailed in two close sets in a 7-5, 7-6 (6) win over Nikolaeva, with Tomey needing three sets for a 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-4 victory over Pribylova. Also earning victories were Colic, who cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Hawaii's Alzbeta Houbova, and Ates picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win over Shermis.
 
In other singles matches Yusupova fell to the nation's 119-th ranked player, Petra Melounova of Hawaii, 6-3, 6-0, and Kansas' Jenna Koch defeated Michalkova, 6-2, 6-4. Nina Khmelnitckaia of Kansas escaped with a 7-6, 7-6 (4) win over WSU's Victoria Matejevic.
                       
For the opening weekend event, Miksovska, Colic and Tomey all went 3-0 in singles while the Cougars 14-7 overall in singles and 4-5 in doubles.
 
The Cougars are next in action Saturday when they open up dual match play by hosting Seattle and Eastern Washington. Both matches will be played at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse, with the Seattle match at 10 a.m. and Eastern Washington at 5 p.m.
