Three Cougars Set For U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials

Wetterstrom, Locke and Margetts head to the olympic trials this week in Omaha.
PULLMAN, Wash. – Three Washington State swimmers will compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials Wednesday, June 29 and Thursday, June 30 in Omaha, Neb. The trials are the sole qualifier for swimmers hoping to earn a spot on the USA Swimming Olympic Team that will compete in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
Senior Elise Locke and sophomore Jasmine Margetts will compete in the 200 butterfly set for Wednesday while recently graduated Presley Wetterstrom will look to make the Olympic team in the 200 breaststroke Thursday.
Locke qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 200 butterfly after posting a time of 2:14.86 in last month's Arena Pro Swim Series in Santa Clara, Calif. The Santa Cruz, Calif. native beat the qualifying mark of 2:14.99. This past season, Locke tallied seven individual wins, earned Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention and capped the year at the Pac-12 Championships by posting the second-fastest 200 butterfly time in school history.
Margetts re-qualified for the trials in the 200 butterfly last summer after posting a time of 2:14.84 at the U.S. Junior Nationals. As a freshman this past season, the Torrance, Calif. native led the Cougars with 14 individual wins and notched three WSU Top-10 times during the Pac-12 Championships in the 200 fly, 400 IM and 200 backstroke.
Wetterstrom qualified for the 200 breaststroke while competing at the 2015 Arena Swim Series in Santa Clara, Calif. last summer. The Colfax, Calif. native swam a time of 2:34.02 to beat the qualifying mark of 2:34.99. This past season, Wetterstrom posted 11 individual wins, tying for the second-most on the teams and also set the school record in the 200 breaststroke at the Ohio State Invite and posted a WSU Top-10 mark in the 400 IM at the Pac-12 Championships. Wetterstrom also earned Pac-12 All-Academic first-team honors for the third straight year.
