No. 57 Cougars Fall to No. 19 Stanford, 5-2

PULLMAN, Wash. – Sophmore Donika Bashota knocked off the No. 78-ranked player in the nation, but the No. 19 Stanford Cardinal went on to win 5-2 over No. 57 Washington State on Senior Day, Saturday morning at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts. The Cougars fall to 17-8, 2-7 in Pac-12 play, while the Cardinal improve to 12-5, 7-1 in Pac-12 action.


After defeating California's Klara Fabikova, the nation's No. 12-ranked player, on Friday, Bashota produced another impressive effort upsetting Stanford's Caroline Doyle, ranked No.78 in the nation. Bashota fell in a close first-set, 7-5, but bounced back to take the second, 6-3. During the third-set tiebreaker, Bashota took down Doyle with a convincing 10-2 effort, rounding off the 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-2) win. 


At No. 6, Leenknecht fell to Melissa Lord 6-2, 6-0, while Huynh dropped a 6-3, 6-1 match to Caroline Lampl at the No. 4 position. The Cardinal clinched the match when Krista Hardebeck, ranked No. 97 nationally, posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Barbora Michalkova at No. 3.


Carol Zhao, ranked No. 55 nationally, defeated Maria Biryukova, 6-0, 7-5, at No. 1 singles. At No. 5, Miksovska recorded a three-set 6-7 (0), 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) win over Kimberly Yee to close out the match for the Cougars. 


The day opened with doubles where Stanford captured two matches to clinch the doubles point. At No. 3 Hardebeck and Lampl, ranked No. 49 nationally, posted a 6-2 win over Biryukova and Miksovska for the first win. The nation's No. 4-ranked team of Davidson and Doyle then secured the point with a 6-2 win over Bashota and Victoria Matejevic at No. 1. The No. 2 match between Stanford'sLord and Zhao and WSU's Lize Leenknecht and Trang Huynh was abandoned with the Washington State pair leading 5-4.


Washington State concludes Pac-12 regular season play, Friday, April 15 at No. 47 Washington. Match time is set for 12:30 p.m. and will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
