TEMPE, Ariz. – Senior
Maria Biryukova defeated the nation's 66th-ranked player, but it was not enough as No. 26 Arizona State posted a 6-1 victory over No. 62 Washington State, Saturday afternoon at the Whiteman Tennis Center. With the loss the Cougars fall to 17-6 overall, 2-5 in Pac-12 play, while the Sun Devils improve to 15-4, 6-1 in Pac-12 action.
Doubles action began the day with Arizona State capturing the opening doubles point. Ebony Panoho and Alexandra Osborne, ranked No. 22 nationally, defeated
Donika Bashota and
Victoria Matejevic at No. 1, 6-3. Kassidy Jump and Sammi Hampton posted a 6-3 win over Biryukova and
Aneta Miksovska at No. 3, giving ASU the 1-0 lead. The remaining match at the No. 2 position between WSU's
Trang Huynh and
Lize Leenknecht and ASU's Desirae Krawczyk and Stephanie Vlad was stopped with the match knotted at 5-5.
In singles play, the Cougars quickly drew even with the Sun Devils at 1-1. At No. 2, Biryukova posted a solid 6-4, 6-3 win over Jump, the nation's 66th-ranked player. With the win, Biryukova moved into a tie for sixth on the WSU all-time wins list. The senior from Moscow, Russia, has accrued 87 victories to move into a tie with Andjela Kankaras (2009-13) and Erica Perkins (1998-02).
The Sun Devils regained the lead when Gussie O'Sullivan defeated Matejevic 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6, while Stephanie Vlad rode a 6-2, 6-3 win over Miksovska at No. 4 to give ASU the 3-1 lead. At No. 5, Leenknecht fell in the first-set, but captured a 7-5 second-set over Hampton, before falling in the clinching match, 6-3, 5-7, 6-0.
Washington State had won the first sets at both No. 1 and No. 3, but could not maintain the momentum to close out the match. At No. 1, Bashota won the first set against Krawczyk, the No. 24-ranked player in the nation, 6-2, but lost the second 6-2, and could not retake the lead falling in a three-set 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 loss. At No. 3, Huynh won her first-set 6-3 against Panoho, but could not continue her momentum and fell in a hard-fought three-set 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 loss to conclude the match.
The Cougars are next in action Friday when they return to Pullman to face No. 1 California. Match time is set for 1:30 p.m.
