No. 47 Cougars Fall to No. 27 UCLA, 6-1

Los Angeles – Senior Trang Huynh posted a three-set win at No. 4 singles but it was not enough as the 27th-ranked UCLA Bruins came away with a 6-1 victory over No. 47 Washington State Friday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

With the loss the Cougars fall to 13-2 on the season, 0-1 in conference play, while UCLA improves to 8-3, 2-1 in Pac-12 action.

Doubles started the day with UCLA capturing the opening point. At No. 1, Kyle McPhillips and Catherine Harrison, the nation's fifth-ranked duo, defeated Maria Biryukova and Huynh, 6-3. UCLA's No. 3 pair of Alaina Miller and Kristin Wiley followed with a 6-2 victory over Lize Leenknecht and Aneta Miksovska to seal the point. The third match was stopped with Donika Bashota and Victoria Matejevic leading Terri Fleming and Kelly Shaffer, 4-3.

In singles play, the Cougars struggled to get anything going. First off was 19th-ranked Harrison, who defeated Maria Biryukova, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1, followed by McPhillips, who defeated Bashota, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. The loss snaps Bashota's 14 match unbeaten streak to start the spring season. Miller clinched the team victory with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) win over Michalkova at No. 3, giving UCLA an insurmountable 4-0 lead.

Huynh won WSU's only match of the afternoon after jumping out fast then holding on for 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Fleming at No. 4. Huynh continues to impress, improving her spring season record to 14-0.

Miksovska fell to Wiley in a hard-fought 7-5, 6-3 match at the No. 5 position, while Shaffer finished off a 7-6 (6), 6-2 win over Matejevic at No. 6 to close out the match.

The Cougars return to action looking to bounce back facing USC Saturday, March 5, at noon.
