No. 69 Cougars Top Portland, 5-2

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Washington State tennis team snapped its three-game skid by posting a 5-2 win over Portland Sunday at the Mountain Park Racquet Club.

Washington State (14-4) wasted no time taking advantage of Portland (4-7), capturing the doubles point. The No. 1 duo of Maria Biryukova and Trang Huynh rolled over Lucia Butkovska and Jelena Lazarevic, 6-2. At No. 3, Aneta Miksovska and Barbora Michalkova bested Radina Dimitrova and Tatiana Grigoryan, 6-3, clinching the point for WSU. Donika Bashota and Lize Leenknecht were trailing 4-5 against Maja Mladenovic and Emily Gould at No. 2, before play was stopped.

The Cougars continued their success, taking the second point quickly. Leenknecht, at No. 6, posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Gould. Portland was able to get on the board with win at No. 3 as Michalkova fell to Mladenovic 6-3, 6-1. No. 5 Miksovska extended the WSU lead to 3-1, cruising past Tori Troesch, 6-1, 7-5. The Pilots answered again as Grigoryan defeated Huynh, 7-6, 6-0, to cut the WSU lead to 3-2.

At No. 2, Biryukova took an early lead, out rallying Dimitrova in a close first set, 7-5. In the second set, Biryukova came away with the 6-2 win, to finish the 7-5, 6-2 victory giving WSU the 4-2 lead.

Bashota, at No. 1, came away with a hard-fought win over a tough opponent. In the first set, Bashota and Butkovska went back and forth before Bashota claimed a 6-3 first set. Butkovska struck back and brought the match to one set a piece posting a 6-2 second set. During the third set, Bashota put away her opponent by posting a 6-3 third set, finishing off a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 victory. With the win, Bashota moves into second place on the WSU season singles wins list, tied with Liudmila Vasilieva (2012), with 32 victories. She surpasses her 31 wins from last season, which was a WSU freshman record.

Washington State returns home after its month long road swing, Friday against Utah at 1:30 p.m. at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
