No. 66 Cougars Blank Utah State, 6-0

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State tennis team, No. 66 in the most recent ITA rankings, opened its doubleheader with a 6-0 victory over Utah State, Sunday at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse. With the win the Cougars improve to 11-0 on the season, while the Aggies drop to 3-6.

WSU raced to a quick 1-0 lead by taking the doubles point. At No. 1 Donika Bashota and Lize Leenknecht defeated Ekaterina Tugarinova and Lexi Turley, 6-1, while No. 3 Barbora Michalkova and Aneta Miksovska secured the doubles point posting a 6-2 win over Nini Guensler and Meghan Lyall. The No. 2 match was stopped with Maria Biryukova and Trang Huynh tied with Sabrina Demerath and Maggie O'Meara, 5-5.

Michalkova increased the WSU lead to 2-0 as she easily defeated Demerath 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3. No. 4 Miksovska continues to impress by posting a dominating 6-1, 6-1, victory over O'Meara to give the Cougars the 3-0 lead. Miksovska is now a perfect 10-0 during the spring season, and off to the second-best start for a WSU freshman accumulating 20 wins and only three losses.

The Cougars handed Utah State their sixth loss of the season as Bashota clinched the match for the Cougars easily defeating Tugarinova 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2. Bashota improves her undefeated record to 11-0 and passes Liudmila Vasilieva (2011-12) for the second-best start in school history with a 28-2 record.

Biryukova was able to put away Guensler by posting a 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 1 giving WSU the 5-0 lead. With the win, Biryukova now shares eighth on the WSU all-time wins list with Andrea Reisz (1996-99). No. 6 singles was not contested as Utah State did not field an opponent.

No. 5 Matejevic came out strong against Jenna Kane, sweeping the first set 6-0, and followed suit in the second set taking it 6-1, posting the 6-0, 6-1 victory to close out the match for the Cougars.
