Weaver’s Overtime Goal Lifts Cougars Past ASU

PULLMAN, Wash.Morgan Weaver's goal six minutes into the second overtime propelled Washington State to a come-from-behind, 2-1, victory over Arizona State Sunday at Lower Soccer Field.

Weaver's eighth shot of the day capped a strong comeback by the Cougars, who played from behind the majority of the match. The winning goal began from the back on a long pass to Grace Hancock just over midfield. The sophomore played a thru ball to Weaver outside the top of the box, and with a little space, Weaver took one touch then sent a low blast from 25 yards out inside the far post for the game-winner. It marked Weaver's eighth goal of the season and gave WUS its first conference win of the season.

The Cougars (6-6-1, 1-4-0 Pac-12) had dominated play after halftime, pounding the Arizona State (6-5-2, 1-3-1 Pac-12) defense before finally breaking through in the 83rd minute. Trailing 1-0, senior Kaitlyn Johnson's shot inside the box deflected off a defender before ASU goalkeeper Megan Delaney made a diving save but could not collect the ball. Freshman Katie Jones was right there to punch in the rebound in front of the net, finding the equalizer for the Cougars.

Arizona State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute when the Cougars were flagged for a foul inside the penalty area. Sun Devil junior Jazmarie Mader converted the ensuring penalty kick for her eight goal of the season and the early ASU lead.

The first half played fairly event with WSU holding a 7-5 edge in shots and 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. But the second half and both overtimes belonged to WSU as the Cougars controlled play and kept the ball on the ASU side of the field for most of the final 60 minutes.

The Cougars finished the game with a 30-6 advantage in shots, including 14 on goal. After halftime they outshot ASU 23-1 and had a 10-3 edge in corner kicks. The 30 shots on the match marked a season high for the Cougars.

The aggressive style displayed by WSU forced Delaney into 12 saves while WSU goalkeeper Ella Dederick saved the only shot on goal she saw outside of the penalty kick.

The Cougars are next in action Friday when they travel to Salt Lake City to face Utah. Match time is set for 6 p.m. PT.
