Cougars Can?t Keep Pace with Washington

SEATTLE – The Washington State women's basketball team erased a 13-point halftime deficit, but was unable to complete the comeback, Saturday, against the University of Washington (15-4, 6-2 Pac-12), falling to the Huskies, 63-69. The Cougars (12-7, 3-5 Pac-12) were led in scoring by freshman Borislava Hristova with 13 points.

WSU entered halftime trailing by 13 points, but returned from the locker room and outscored the Huskies 24-9 in the third quarter. Senior Taylor Edmondson went a perfect four-of-four from beyond the arc in the period to aid the Cougars. Washington Head Coach Mike Neighbors received a technical midway through the period, and the Cougars went 11-2 for the remainder of the quarter. WSU took its first lead of the game with 62 seconds left in the quarter and entered the fourth quarter leading 49-47.

The teams traded baskets and the lead for much of the fourth quarter. With WSU leading by one point with 2:20 to play in the game, the Huskies scored seven unanswered points, including 4-of-5 from the free throw line to clinch the victory.

Washington State committed just seven turnovers in the game, a season low, and the fewest since the 2013-14 season, while forcing the Huskies into 13 turnovers. UW's Kelsey Plum, the nation's leading scorer, added 24 points for the Huskies.  Washington, which played just seven players in the game, was outscored off the bench by Washington State 39-0.

WSU's Edmondson lead the Cougars in rebounding, pulling in eight rebounds. Freshman Maria Kostourkova added nine points and Louise Brown added six rebounds.

The Cougars will return to Pullman before traveling to the Bay Area to face California, Friday, Jan. 29, and Stanford, Sunday, Jan. 31.
