PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State tennis team opened its doubleheader with a 7-0 victory over Montana, Saturday at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
The day began with doubles play as the Cougars came away with two victories to clinch the opening point. At No. 2, the WSU duo of
Donika Bashota and
Victoria Matejevic easily defeated Hannah Sulz and Cam Kincaid, 6-1. At No. 3,
Barbora Michalkova and
Aneta Miksovska came away with a dominant 6-2 win over Lidia Dukic and Cat Orfanos, earning the 1-0 lead. At No. 1,
Maria Biryukova and
Trang Huynh were knotted at 5-5 with Francis Dean and Haley Driver when the match was stopped.
In singles play, No. 4 Huynh and No. 2 Bashota led the way for the Cougars and never lost a beat. Huynh posted a convincing 6-1, 6-1 victory over Dukic, while Bashota dominated Driver, 6-3, 6-1, giving the Cougars a quick 3-0 lead.
The Cougars handed Montana the loss as No. 1 Biryukova clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Dean, giving WSU an insurmountable 4-0 lead.
At No. 3 Michalkova bested Sulz posting a solid 6-1, 6-4 win, while No. 5 Miksovska put up a dominant 6-1, 6-0 victory over Kincaid.
No. 6 Matejevic struggled early against Orfanos, dropping the first set, but bounced back to win 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (7) to close out the match for the Cougars.
