THIS WEEK: The Washington State women's golf team heads to Tucson, Ariz., to compete at the Wildcat Invitational, Monday through Tuesday, March 14-15.
THE TOURNAMENT: Two rounds will be played Monday, with a shotgun start beginning at 8 a.m. PT at the 54-hole, par-72, 6,492-yard Sewailo Golf Club…the third and final round will also be a shotgun start beginning at 8 a.m. PT Tuesday…play will be in foursomes.
THE FIELD: Joining WSU and host-school No. 12 Arizona in the 15-team field will be No. 13 Arizona State, No. 19 Colorado, No. 35 Miami, No. 49 Michigan, No. 24 New Mexico, No. 45 Purdue, No. 28 South Carolina, No. 21 UNLV, No. 39 Vanderbilt, Baylor, Kansas, New Mexico State and Northern Arizona.
REPRESENTING WASHINGTON STATE: Competing for the Cougars will be sophomore Alivia Brown, junior Cherokee Kim, senior Monica Huang, freshman Madison Odiorne, and sophomore Bree Wanderscheid.
LAST TIME AT THE WILDCAT INVITATIONAL: After the second round was delayed due to darkness at the 2015 tournament, Washington State finished 12th (+47, 911) in a field which featured eight nationally-ranked opponents…Pac-12 competitor USC won the tournament with a three-round total of 834 (-30)…Kim tied for 30th at 8-over par (224), one stroke ahead of Brown (+9, 225), who tied for 38th…then-senior Kristen Rue tied for 63rd (+16, 232).
LAST TIME ON THE GREEN: WSU finished 14th (+78, 942) at the Bruin Wave Invitational, March 1, at the San Luis Obispo Country Club…the top-three finishers were all Pac-12 competitors, with No. 2 UCLA winning the tournament at 868 (+4) and No. 18 Arizona State (+18, 882) and California (+24, 888) taking second and third, respectively…Brown tied for 43rd (+17, 233), 20 strokes back of tournament-champion Louise Ridderstrom of UCLA (-3, 213)…Huang tied for 53rd (+20, 236).
COACHING STAFF: The Cougars are led by seventh-year head coach Kelli Kamimura, who led the team to its lowest team scoring average in school history last season…assisting Kamimura is WSU alumna and second-year assistant coach Emma Betland, who golfed for the Cougars from 2010-2013.
