Cougars Score Late Winner Against Cowgirls

Box Score

PULLMAN, Wash. – With just over two minutes to play at Lower Soccer Field, Friday night, Washington State women's soccer senior Cara Wegner chipped the Oklahoma State keeper to give the Cougars (5-0-0) a 2-1 victory over the Cowgirls (2-4-0).

Wegner's goal came as a result of an opportunity for senior Kourtney Guetlein, who took a shot from the top of the penalty area. Oklahoma State goalkeeper, Michela Ongaro, saved the shot, but could not maintain control of the ball. Wegner charged in for the rebound and poked it past Ongaro from three yards out, notching her second goal of the season. Guetlein, who was credited with the assist, moved into second place in WSU's record book with 18 career assists.

“I knew Kourtney had her head up and was going for the shot,” Wegner said. “I knew I had to be there. It was a great shot. Unfortunately for the keeper, she dropped it, but it was fortunate for us, and we got it into the back of the net.”

Washington State jumped out to an early lead in front of 1,271 fans, the third-largest crowd in school history. Guetlein earned her first goal of the season just 85 seconds in to the match, chipping OSU's Ongaro from the top of the box. After junior Kaitlyn Johnson passed to sophomore Sofia Anker-Kofoed, Anker-Kofoed played a ball inside a Cowgirl defender for Guetlein to run on to. Ongaro was forced to come off her line, which Guetlein read and put the shot out of reach to give WSU a 1-0 lead.

The goal was Guetlein's seventh in her career and marked the Cougars' ninth goalscorer of the season. Anker-Kofoed picked up her first-career assist, while Johnson earned her third assist of the season.

The Cowgirls tied the match in the 37th minute off of corner kick from the right side. WSU's redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper, Ella Dederick, punched away a headed shot before OSU's Courtney Dike collected the rebound, turned, and put a shot in the bottom left corner.

In what was a highly physical match, just six total fouls were called. Dederick picked up her fifth win of the season, making eight saves to OSU's five. The Cowgirls outshot the Cougars 17-15 in the match, with nine shots on goal to WSU's seven.

Washington State faces Cal State Fullerton (6-0-1) this Sunday, Sept. 13, at Lower Soccer Field. Kickoff is scheduled for noon with a live stream available at www.wsucougars.com.
