BERKELEY, Calif. – The No. 3 California Golden Bears won all six singles matches en route to a 7-0 victory at Hellman Tennis Complex Sunday afternoon.
The day started with doubles where California (17-3, 8-1 Pac-12) took the early lead, capturing the doubles point. At No. 3, Maria Biryukova and Nastia Vasyukhina faced off against Lyann Hoang and Karla Popovic and were outdueled, 8-2. On court two, Donika Bashota and Victoria Matejevic also took an early lead but were bested 8-2 by Denise Starr and Lynn Chi. At No. 1 doubles, WSU's Elizaveta Luzina and Lize Leenknecht battled the No.9-ranked pair of Klara Fabikova and Zsofi Susanyi. The two battled and were tied at five apiece before play was suspended.
The Golden Bears opened singles action capturing four-straight matches in straight sets. At No. 3, Leenknecht fell to No. 34 Susanyi, 6-0, 6-1,before Vasyukhina at No. 6 fell 6-0, 6-2 to Hoang. The Golden Bears clinched the match as No. 47 Starr defeated Biryukova, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2. At No. 1, Luzina fell to No. 20 Fabikova, 6-1, 6-2.
Both Bashota and Matejevic split sets forcing tiebreakers to extend each match. Bashota at No. 4 dropped the first set 3-6 to No. 84 Popovic, before rallying back with a 6-3 second. During the tiebreak, the two battled back-and-forth before Popovic took the upperhand and rounded off the match 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (8).
At No. 5 singles, Matejevic dropped the first set 6-1 to Cecillia Estlander, before rallying back in the second set 7-6 (5). Matejevic looked to end Cal's sweep chances but came up short in the tiebreak, being bested 1-0(1), rounding off the day with a 6-1, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (1) loss.
The Cougars return home to face San Francisco, Saturday April 18 for its final match of the season. First serve is slated for 11 a.m.
