STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 13 Stanford Cardinal swept a;; six singles matches en route to the 7-0 victory over Washington State in a Pac-12 conference tennis match Saturday morning at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
The day opened with doubles where Stanford (14-4, 7-2 Pac-12) captured two matches to clinch the doubles point. At No. 3 Krista Hardebeck and Paulette Wolak posted an 8-2 win over Maria Biryukova and Nastia Vasyukhina for the first win. The nation's No. 1-ranked team of Taylor Davidson and Carol Zhao then secured the point with an 8-3 win over Elizaveta Luzina and Lize Leenknecht at No. 1. The No. 2 match between Stanford's Ellen Tsay and Carolina Doyle and WSU's Donika Bashota and Victoria Matejevic was abandoned with the Stanford pair leading 7-5.
In singles action, the Cougars (12-11, 0-9) split sets at No. 2 where Biryukova dropped the first 6-3, then forced a third-set tiebreaker by taking the second set, 6-2, against Davidson, ranked No. 16 nationally. In the tiebreaker, Davidson prevailed 10-4 for the victory.
The Cardinal captured the remaining five matches in straight sets. At No. 1, Zhao, ranked No. 4, defeated Luzina, 7-5, 6-1 while No. 24 Doyle posted a 6-4, 6-0 win over Leenknecht at No. 3.
At No. 4, Hardebeck, ranked No. 116, had little trouble with Bashota, winning 6-2, 6-0 while No. 100 Tsay rode two breaks of serve to a 6-4, 6-4 win over Matejevic at No. 5. At No. 6, Lindsay Kostas recorded a 6-2, 6-3 win over Vasyukhina.
The Cougars conclude their two-match Bay Area swing Sunday at No. 3 California. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
