Cougars Fall to No. 19 Arizona State, 6-0

PULLMAN, Wash. – The 19th-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils captured three, three-set matches in defeating Washington State, 6-0, in a Pac-12 Conference tennis match Sunday at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.

The day began with singles play and the Sun Devils jumped out early as Kassidy Jump won the final eight games of the match in a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Lize Leenknecht at No. 3. Shortly thereafter, Ebony Panoho extended the lead to 2-0 as she posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Holly Monahan at No. 6.

The remaining four matches were all close affairs. At No. 5, Cougar freshman Donika Bashota looked to be in control as she captured the first set 6-1 and was up 3-1 in the second against Leighann Sahagun. Sahagun earned a break to make it 3-3 and rolled from there, capturing the final 11 games for a 1-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory and putting Arizona State one match away from the team win.

At No. 2, Sun Devil Stephanie Vlad captured a break of serve late in each set as she defeated Elizaveta Luzina 6-3, 6-3, clinching the team victory. The Cougars were up a set at No. 4 where Victoria Matejevic led Joanna Smith 6-3. Smith came back to captured the second set, 6-2, and led 4-1 in the third before Matejevic mounted a comeback. The Cougar sophomore tied the match at 4-4 and then 5-5 before Smith broke late for the 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 win.

The final match on was at No. 1 where ASU's Desirae Krawczyk, the nation's 44th-ranked player, won the first set against Maria Biryukova 6-1. Biryukova responded by taking the second set, 6-3, and was up a break early in the third but could not hold on. Krawczyk won the final three games for the 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 victory, completing the singles sweep.

With the team outcome already decided, doubles was not played.

The Cougars return to the court Thursday when they begin a three-match road trip at No. 50BYU, Thursday. Match time is set for 10 a.m. PT.
