Box Score PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State women's basketball saw its season come to an end after Eastern Washington scored with .4 seconds left to escape Beasley Coliseum with a 67-65 victory in the opening round of the WNIT Wednesday.
Washington State finished the season with a 17-15 overall record after making its second straight trip to the WNIT, the first time in school history that WSU has reached the postseason in consecutive seasons. Eastern Washington improved to 21-11 overall and will face the winner of Pacific and Sacramento State in the second round.
Junior guard Lia Galdeira led the Cougars with 31 points while recording six rebounds, six steals and three assists. Junior forward Mariah Cooks notched her third double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds while senior guard Tia Presley tallied 11 points and five rebounds in her final game in a Cougar uniform.
Eastern Washington shot 44 percent from the floor including seven 3-pointers while Washington State was held to 38 percent shooting and just 2-of-17 from behind the arc. The Cougars scored 19 points off of 18 Eagle turnovers but went 11-of-18 at the free throw line, including a couple attempts that rattled out in the final minute.
Washington State opened the game with nine straight points as a pair of Galdeira steals led to a pair of easy buckets. The Eagles then settled in and started to use the long ball to erase the early Cougar lead. Eastern Washington used two different 9-2 runs while connecting on six from behind the arc to build a 39-25 lead at the 2:38 mark.
WSU then caught fire, closing the half on a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to four. Galdeira sparked the run with a steal and layup and Presley followed with a baseline drive for two as she was fouled. The Eastern Washington head coach was issued a technical after the Presley layup and Presley sank both free throws. On the ensuing possession, Cooks grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on a layup before Galdeira capped the run with a baseline jumper from the right side just before the half.
Presley led Washington State will 11 points while Galdeira added 10 points in the first 20 minutes. EWU held a four-point lead at the break after shooting 50 percent from the field including 6-of-10 from three.
Both teams traded baskets for the first 10 minutes of the second half before the Cougars used another 10-0 streak to take a lead for the first time since the game's opening minutes. Galdeira scored on a baseline drive and followed with an acrobatic finish on a fastbreak layup as she was fouled. She hit the free throw and then knocked down a three from the right wing to give WSU a one-point lead on the following possession. The next trip down saw Galdeira dish to Cooks underneath for two, capping the run and pushing the WSU lead to 55-52 at the 8:24 mark.
Galdeira connected on another three from the right wing on the next possession to extend the lead to five but the Eagles came right back with a three, followed by a layup and a free throw. Another driving layup from Galdeira gave the Cougars a 60-59 advantage with 3:26 remaining as both teams began to trade baskets down the stretch.
Trailing by one with 1:35 remaining, Galdeira knotted the game up at 63 with a free throw after the Cougar defense forced a turnover. Washington State came up with another defensive stop and Cooks put WSU back up one after sinking one of two free throws with 58 seconds remaining.
Eastern Washington countered with a driving layup on the left side for a 65-64 lead with 45 seconds but Galdeira sank one of two free throw attempts for WSU on the next trip to notch things up at 65 with 29 seconds remaining.
EWU called a pair of timeouts on its final possession to set up the final play. Guard Jade Redmon dribbled the clock down to the final seconds before spinning into the lane and scooping up a shot that hit the front of the rim and rolled in with .4 seconds remaining, giving the Eagles a 67-65 victory.
