PULLMAN, Wash. – The second-ranked UCLA Bruins lived up to their billing as they posted a 7-0 victory over Washington State in a Pac-12 conference tennis match Friday at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
With the loss the Cougars fall to 10-5 on the season, 0-3 in conference play, while the Bruins improve to 11-2 in their conference opener.
Doubles started the day and UCLA captured the top two matches to clinch the opening point. At No. 2, Robin Anderson and Chanelle Van Nguyen, ranked No. 44 nationally, defeated Lize Leenknecht and Victoria Matejevic, 8-3. UCLA's No. 1 pair of Kyle McPhillips and Catherine Harrison, the nation's third-ranked duo, followed with an 8-3 victory over Maria Biryukova and Elizaveta Luzina to seal the point. The third match was stopped with UCLA's Kristin Wiley and Terri Fleming leading Donika Bashota and Holly Monahan, 7-4.
In singles play the Bruins swept all six matches in straight sets. First off was Fleming, who defeated Nastia Vasyukhina, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6, followed by Anderson, ranked No. 2, who defeated Biryukova, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Kaitlin Ray, the nation's 89th-ranked player, clinched the team victory with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Bashota at No. 4, giving UCLA an insurmountable 4-0 lead.
The 79th-ranked Harrison got past Leenknecht, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3 while Van Nguyen, ranked 10 nationally, held off a late charge by Luzina to win 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2. The day ended when Wiley finished off a 6-3, 6-1 win over Matejevic at No. 5.
The Cougars next face Lewis-Clark State in a nonconference match Friday evening at 5 p.m.
