HOUSTON, Texas – The Washington State tennis team remains undefeated after sweeping Prairie View A&M on a neutral court, Thursday afternoon in Houston.
Despite a two hour weather delay, the No. 57 Cougars opened the day dominating singles play.
At No. 1, Maria Biryukova continued her undefeated season outdueling Taylor LeFridge. In a back-and-forth first set, Biryukova ran into a little trouble early but found her form late, capturing the set 6-4. In the second set, Biryukova never lost a beat, rounding off the match, 6-4, 6-1.
Lize Leenknecht, Donika Bashota, and Nastia Vasyukhina all continued their unbeaten steaks in convincing fashion. At No. 2, Leenknecht outrallied Sydney Thomas in the second set, posting a 6-0, 6-3 victory. Newcomer Bashota at No. 3 swiftly defeated Stacy Lackey with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep, while fellow freshman Vasyukhina at No. 5, easily rolled over Maria Lackey, 6-0, 6-1.
No. 4 Victoria Matejevic picked up her sixth win of the season with a quick 6-0, 6-0 win over Shaddae Findley, while No. 6 Holly Monahan picked up her second win of the season defeating Tatiana Ruhl, 6-1, 6-2.
After clinching the team win, the Cougars rounded off the sweep in doubles play. The No. 1 duo of Bashota and Matejevic had little trouble against LeFridge and S.Lackey posting a 6-1 win, while the No. 2 pair of Leenknecht and Grace Lymer-Sullivan, swept Thomas and Findley, 6-0. Vasuykhina and Biryukova at No. 3 doubles, led 4-2 against M. Lackey and Ruhl before play was suspended.
Washington State tennis returns to the court against No. 51 Houston, Friday, Feb. 6 at 10 a.m. PST. and wraps up the road trip with No. 28 Auburn slated for 9 a.m. PST. on Saturday, Feb. 7.
