PULLMAN, Wash. – Joe Pistorese hurled seven shutout innings and Cameron Frost drove in two runs, as Washington State shutout UC Riverside 3-0 at Bailey-Brayton Field Friday evening.
Pistorese (1-1) dominated the Highlander (5-6) batters for most of the night, facing the minimum through the first five innings. The senior southpaw struck out five and allowed only three baserunners during his gem.
The Cougars (6-4) picked up their first run in the sixth, as Frost laced a double off the wall in left-center to score P.J. Jones from third to break a scoreless tie.
In the top of the eighth, UCR used a pair of hits and a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third. Junior left-hander Matt Bower came up big out of the bullpen for the Cougars, striking out two to end the threat.
Frost, who finished 2-for-4, delivered another clutch hit in the eighth, plating Ian Sagdal from second with a single through the right side. Later in the inning, Shane Matheny drew a bases-loaded walk that brought home Wes Leow.
Ian Hamilton picked up his fourth save on the season, tying Ross Humes (2006-08) for second on WSU's all-time career saves list.
Angel Landazuri (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing one run on three hits while striking out four over six innings.
The series continues Saturday with first pitch slated for 2 p.m. Nick Leonard is scheduled to take the mound for WSU, while UCR is still yet to determine their starter.
