PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) — Washington State's Josh Hawkinson led all players with 24 points and 10 rebounds in a 91-67 nonconference win over Portland State on Sunday afternoon at Beasley Coliseum.
The Cougars, coming off a loss to No. 13 Gonzaga, improved to 5-1. Charles Callison scored 12 points for WSU, and Ike Iroegbu had 10.
Arizona State graduate transfer Calaen Robinson, one of 12 transfers on the Portland State roster, led the Vikings (3-4) with 19 points. Isaiah Pineiro added 14 off the bench. Cameron Forte, who had been leading the Vikings with 21.7 points and 10.0 rebounds per game, was limited to nine points and four rebounds.
Hawkinson shot 10 for 11 from the field. He sank all eight of his shots in the first half. WSU built a 47-30 lead at the break, and a 12-0 run early in the second half extended the Cougars' lead to 65-35.
The Cougars established season bests for most points scored and fewest points allowed in a game. The Vikings recorded season worsts for points scored and allowed.
The Cougars shot 53.2 percent from the floor and held Portland State to 41 percent. The Vikings hit just 15.4 percent of their 3-pointers, compared to 38.1 for the Cougars.
Washington State, much bigger than the Vikings inside, outrebounded PSU 40-30 and had a 38-26 advantage in points in the paint.
