Soccer Comes From Behind to Win at Oregon State

Box Score

CORVALLIS, Ore. – In rainy and windy conditions Sunday morning, the Washington State soccer team came from behind to beat the Oregon State Beavers, 2-1, at Paul Lorenz Field. After the Beavers (6-9-3, 2-8-0) netted the opening goal in the 16th minute, the Cougars (13-5-0, 6-4-0) equalized in the 52nd minute before scoring the game-winning goal in the 86th minute, courtesy of redshirt-senior Beau Bremer.

“I'm really proud of our team's response after going down a goal,” WSU Head Coach Todd Shulenberger said. “I was happy with our effort in the second half. This team is proving that they are true road warriors. I'm looking forward to talking that mentality across the state to face our rivals this Thursday.”

Dry weather conditions held out for the opening 45 minutes, as the Cougars found themselves down one goal. Oregon State's Kayla Latham scored off a corner kick when she found the ball at her feet after WSU failed to clear the initial cross. Latham poked the shot in from 10 yards out to give the Beavers the 1-0 lead. Washington State struggled to clear several corners from the Beavers in the opening period, as OSU had five opportunities from the corner flag. However, the Cougars did not allow a corner from the Beavers in the second half, ending the match at a 5-3 disadvantage.

After returning from the break, rain began to fall at Paul Lorenz Field as the Cougars increased their offensive pressure. WSU found its equalizing goal in the 52nd minute when Sofia Anker-Kofoed smashed home her first-career goal. Anker-Kofoed threaded her shot between the legs of the Oregon State goal keeper from seven yards out after receiving the cross from senior Kourtney Guetlein. The assist from Guetlein was her 20th-career assist, becoming just the second Cougar in school history to record 20 assists, and just three shy of the all-time program record.

Bremer's game-winning goal came late in the match, with 85:34 on the scoreboard, after the rain had subsided. Fellow senior Cara Wegner challenged a clearance from OSU, sending the ball back into Oregon State's penalty area. Senior Kourtney Guetlein left the ball for Bremer who ran on and one-timed the shot directly at the Beavers' goalkeeper. However, Bremer followed the shot and tapped the rebound into the middle of the empty net from seven yards out. The goal was Bremer's third of the season and Wegner's third assist of the year.

The Cougars improved to 8-1 on the road and 5-0 in conference play, while redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Ella Dederick notched her 13th-career win. The Camarillo, Calif., native made three saves in the match, while cutting off numerous crosses in by the Beavers.

Oregon State committed twice as many fouls as WSU, whistled 14 times to the Cougars' seven. The Beavers also outshot the Cougars 13-11, but were only able to put four shots on frame, while Washington State put 8-of-11 looks on target.

Washington State will conclude its regular season Thursday, Nov. 5, at Washington. The Cougars will face their rivals at 7 p.m. with coverage on the Pac-12 Networks.
