Cougar Swimming Downs UNLV, Falls to Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 30 Washington State won three races Friday against the University of Arizona and UNLV. The Cougars defeated UNLV 185.5-108.5 and fell to Arizona 182-98.

"We swam great today, Arizona is a great program but we stayed tough and worked hard to produced some great times," Washington State Head Coach Tom Jager said. "Elise raced well to win the 200 fly and so did our freshman Jasmine Margetts. We are proving to be one tough team and I am enjoying coaching them."

Junior Elise Locke was a top performer for the Cougars, picking up two first place finishes. In the 200 butterfly she touched the wall first at 2:01.82 placing her sixth on the WSU Top-10 list. In the 100 butterfly she finished first at 55.81.

The Cougars claimed the top three spots in the 100 butterfly, sophomore Anna Brolin finished behind Locke at 56.36 and junior Haley Rose Love finished third at 56.53.

Washington State opened the meet with a third place tie in the 200 medley relay. The team of Love, Frederikke Hall, Locke, and Hannah Bruggman clocked a time of 1:44.75.

In the 200 breaststroke, senior Presley Wetterstrom broke into the WSU Top-10 list with a time of 2:15.28, placing her sixth on the list and finishing second in the race. Teammate Hall finished fourth in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:19.94. Wetterstrom also contributed three points for the Cougars with a third place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.54).

Freshman Jasmine Margetts also placed into the WSU Top-10 list with a time of 2:02.60 and a third place finish in the 200 butterfly, putting her eighth on the list.

In the 400 IM the Cougars claimed two of the top three spots. Margetts touched the wall second at 4:27.69 and Wetterstrom just behind her at 4:29.15. Senior Loree Olson finished fourth with a time of 4:33.82. Olson also had a fourth place finish in the 100 backstroke, finishing first for the Cougars at 57.23.

Junior Kendra Griffin picked up three points for WSU in the 100 freestyle when she finished third at 10:26.40.

Bruggman contributed five points to the Cougars score with a third place finish in the 50 freestyle (23.73) and fourth in the 100 freestyle (51.65).

In the 200 backstroke, Olson touched the wall fourth at 2:02.92, picking up two points for the Cougars, following her was teammate Margetts, at 2:03.34.

In the 500 freestyle, WSU tallied three points when sophomore Rachel Thompson clocked a time of 5:05.54, finishing fourth and redshirt freshman Jessica Marston followed her with a time of 5:09.24.

Junior Addisynn Bursch, Hall, and Marston all claimed one point for the Cougars. Bursch finished fifth in the 200 freestyle at 1:52.19, Hall placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.11, and Marston in the 1000 freestyle at 10:33.13.

The Cougars closed the meet with in an impressive fashion, winning the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Bruggman, Love, Bursch, and Locke clocked a time of 3:27.15. 

Washington State will return to the pool when they travel to San Diego, Calif. on Nov. 7 to face San Diego State University in a dual meet.
