Box Score PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State soccer team's upset fell short Friday night at Lower Soccer Field, as No. 4 Stanford scored the game-winning goal in the 109th minute to grab the 2-1 double-overtime victory in Pullman. The Cardinal (13-2-0, 7-0-0) earned a corner in the 109th minute, which senior Haley Rosen lofted into the box for freshman Averie Collins to head home.
“We're proud of the group. Unfortunately, we don't like the result we got,” WSU Head Coach Todd Shulenberger said. “My heart hurts for the young women and the team hurts themselves. We really gave it our all against an unbelievable Stanford team.”
Stanford outshot the Cougars 24-11 in the match and managed to put seven of its shots on frame to WSU's four. The Cougars started the match strong, pressuring the Cardinal deep into their own third. In the seventh minute, senior Cara Wegner stepped in to win a ball at midfield and carried the ball to the top of the Stanford box. Wegner lined up a shot and smashed it over the outstretched keeper, but the shot floated just above the right corner of the frame.
Early in the 13th minute, Stanford senior Haley Rosen found spaced at the top of the WSU penalty area. Rosen dribbled into the Cougar backline, splitting a pair of defenders before slotting home the first goal of the match from six yards out. Stanford continued to pressure the WSU defense for the next 10 minutes, as Cougar sophomore Jordan Branch regularly cut off the Cardinal's counter attacks.
After making several substitutions around the 30th minute, the Cougars found space to run with fresh legs. WSU earned a corner that found freshman Grace Hancock's head, but was placed just over the crossbar. Then, in the 36th minute, junior Kaitlyn Johnson ran down a ball that Stanford's right back misplayed. Johnson collected the ball, cut in to the left side of the box and smashed a shot at the Cardinal's goalkeeper. Johnson's shot was saved, but Stanford was unable to clear and WSU freshman Maddy Haro ran in to volley home the equalizer from four yards out.
Haro's goal was the second of her career and tied the match, 1-1, with nine minutes left to play in the half. After the goal, the Cougars found space to pass the ball through the midfield, connecting passes as they looked to net a second goal before halftime, but were unable to find the back of the net again.
Returning from the break, the Cougars possessed the ball for much of the first 20 minutes. WSU made overlapping runs, trying to find space behind the Stanford backline. In the 55th minute, junior Kailiana Johnson played a corner kick in to Hancock who headed the ball over the crossbar.
For the remainder of regulation, WSU and Stanford traded opportunities, but neither side was able to find the final pass to secure a victory in regular time. Stanford came out in the opening period of overtime pressing for an early goal. WSU's defense fended off three shots, but was unable to counter for an opportunity of its own.
The match was physical, but clean with nine fouls committed by the Cardinal and four by WSU. Junior Kaitlyn Johnson earned a booking in the 90th minute when the Cougars were pressuring for possession and Johnson went in hard to win a ball off of a Stanford defender.
WSU redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Ella Dederick made five saves in the match, dropping the fourth match of her young career.
“Right now it's about bouncing back,” Shulenberger said. “It's about playing for these seniors on Sunday. This group is resilient. We will bounce back, and we will be ready to go.”
Washington State will honor its seniors Sunday, Oct. 25, in the final regular-season home match of the year. The Cougars will host No. 14 California at 1 p.m. at Lower Soccer Field. The match will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
