Box Score PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State soccer team fell to Arizona, 1-0, Friday at Lower Soccer Field in front of the largest crowd in school history. The No. 16 Cougars (11-3-0, 4-2-0) had 25 shots in the match, including nine on goal, but were unable to find the back of the net against the Wildcats (9-4-1, 3-3-0), who scored in the 36th minute. The crowd of 2,251 fans in attendance bested the previous home record of 1,652 fans at the match Oct. 16, 2011.
Arizona netted the game-winning goal in the 36th minute when freshman Jessica Nelson headed home the goal off of a corner kick. After the kick took a deflection from a WSU player, Nelson found the ball with her head and put it past redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Ella Dederick.
The Cougars had opportunities to take the lead early and later equalize in the match. In the fourth minute junior Kaitlyn Johnson ran on to a 50-50 ball with only the Arizona keeper to beat, but placed the ball just wide of the right post. Late in the match WSU nearly equalized as the ball bounced around the Arizona box. Senior Kourtney Guetlein looked to even the score, but the shot was blocked. Sophomore Chelsea Harkins tried to smash home the rebound, but put the shot high over the crossbar.
In total, WSU outshot the Wildcats 25-12 in the match. The Cougars put nine shots on frame to Arizona's six, and earned six corner kicks to U of A's three. Late in the match Arizona's Alexa Montgomery was cautioned for sweeping the legs of Kaitlyn Johnson, one of the Wildcats seven fouls in the match.
Washington State plays its final regular-season homes matches next week. The Cougars will host Stanford Thursday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. before welcoming California Sunday, Oct. 25, at 1 p.m. Both matches will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
