PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State tennis team kept its dominating winning streak alive by posting a 6-1 win against Portland State Friday at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
Washington State wasted no time taking advantage of Portland State, capturing the doubles point. The No. 1 duo of Lize Leenknecht and Elizaveta Luzina continued to ride their hot streak, rolling over Dané Vorster and Siena Peri, 6-0. At No. 2, Donika Bashota and Victoria Matejevic bested Tracy Dong and Sabina-Elena Preda, 6-2, clinching the point for WSU. Nastia Vasyukhina and Maria Biryukova were up 5-2 over Kelsey Frey and Megan Govi, before play was stopped.
The Cougars continued their dominance, taking the second and third points quickly. The second point for the Cougars came from Leenknecht at No. 2, as she rolled to a no doubt 6-2, 6-0 victory over Peri. No.1 Luzina had little trouble extending the lead to 3-0, cruising past Vorster, 6-2, 6-2. The win moves Luzina to 99 career victories.
Freshmen Bashota, No. 3, and Vasyukhina, No. 4, impressed the field as both remained undefeated recording victories against their respected opponents. Vasyukhina clinched the second win on the day for the Cougars outdueling Preda, 6-1, 6-4, while Bashota rolled over Dong, 6-4, 6-0.
No. 5 Matejevic took an early lead, out rallying Frey in the first set, 6-3. Down early in the second set, Matejevic rallied to defeat Frey 6-3, 6-4.
Grace Lymer-Sullivan, No. 6, made her Cougar and dual season debut and fought every minute of it. In the first set, Lymer-Sullivan and Govi went back and forth trading games, before Lymer-Sullivan earned a late break of serve, claiming a 6-4 first set. Govi struck back and brought the match to one set a piece posting a 6-2 second set. During the third set tiebreaker, Lymer-Sullivan rallied back from a 9-3 deficit but fell 10-8, finishing off a 6-4, 2-6, 0-1(8) loss.
Washington State tennis looks to wrap up its six-match homestand undefeated, as regional opponent Eastern Washington is slated for 6 p.m. at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
