Cougars Cap Weekend with Victory Over Boise State

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State tennis team remains undefeated after a 6-1 victory over Boise State Saturday, at the Simmelink Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse. The Cougars moved to 3-0 on the season while Boise State falls to 2-1.

To open the day, the Cougars struck first. In doubles, the No. 1 duo of Elizaveta Luzina and Lize Leenknecht had little trouble with Naomi de Hart and Milena Toseva, posting an easy 6-1 victory. Victoria Matejevic and Donika Bashota, the No. 2 pair, followed in the winning effort, posting a 6-2 over Bobbi Oshiro and Sammie Watson. At No. 3 doubles, Nastia Vasyukhina and Maria Biryukova trailed to Arianna Paules Aldrey and Megan LaLone, 2-5, before the match was stopped after the Cougars secured the doubles point.

In singles, No. 3 Leenknecht outdueled Paules Aldrey to secure the Cougars a 2-0 lead. After cruising through the fist set 6-1, Leenknecht struggled early in the second. Down 2-3, she captured the next four games to close out a 6-1, 6-3 win and remained undefeated in singles play this season.

Luzina at No. 1, quickly added to the Cougars lead as she out-rallied Teal Vosburgh, posting a convincing 6-1, 6-3 win. At No. 2, Biryukova clinched the match for Washington State in comeback fashion over Toseva. Biryukova dropped the first set 4-6, but found her form posting a 7-6 (3) comeback in the second and a dominant 6-1 third set, rounding off the victory, 4-6, 7-6, 6-1.

At No. 4, Bashota rallied from a set down for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Oshiro. Matejevic at No. 5, struggled against LaLone dropping her first singles match of the year, 6-2, 6-0, while freshman Vasyukhina ended the day easily posting a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Watson.
