MAUI, Hawaii – The Washington State tennis team concluded play at the Maui Invitational by taking all six singles matches against host Hawaii Pacific Sunday afternoon.

The day began with doubles play against Hawaii Pacific, with the Cougars taking five of seven matches. HPU's Lorena Gheorghe and Kristyna Hancaraova defeated Elizaveta Luzina and Lize Leenknecht, 7-5, while WSU's Donika Bashota and Victoria Matejevic defeated Vivian Hansen and Nicole Hoynaski, 6-1. Nastia Vasyukhina and Maria Biryukova had little trouble with Hawaii Pacific's Lea Kruse-Utermann and Hoynaski, 6-0.

In the second round of doubles, Luzina and Leenknecht earned a 6-3 win over Hansen and Hancaraova while Kruse-Utermann and Hoynaski escaped with a 7-5 win over Bashota and Biryukova. Matejevic and Monahan needed a tiebreaker to defeat Gheorghe and Tavitian, 7-6 (3) while Biryukova and Monahan posted a 6-3 win over Utermann and Hoynaski, 6-3.a

In singles play the Cougars swept all six matches. Biryukova defeated Hancaraova 6-4, 6-3 while Luzina closed out two close sets for a 6-4, 6-4 win over Hoynaski. In the only three-set match of the day, Bashota rallied from a set down to defeat Kruse-Utermann, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 and Leenknecht defeated Tavitian 6-2, 6-2.

Monahan defeated Hansen 8-2 while Vasyukhina closed out the day with an 8-4 win over Hansen.

For the three day tournament, Biryukova and Leenknecht went a perfect 4-0 in singles, each winning their singles flights, while Monahan was 3-0. Bashota, who went 3-1 in singles play, also won her singles flight. Overall the Cougars went 29-6 in the season-opening event.

WSU returns to the court Jan. 22 when they host Seattle and Idaho in a doubleheader at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse. The Seattle match begins at 9 a.m. with Idaho to follow at 4 p.m.
