Cooks Notches Double-Double, Cougars Held Off By Cal

Box Score

PULLMAN, Wash. – Junior forward Mariah Cooks notched her first career double-double for Washington State who's second half comeback came up short in a 70-62 defeat to the University of California in Beasley Coliseum Friday.

The Cougars (10-4, 1-2 Pac-12) scored 20 points off of 22 Cal turnovers but surrendered a 53-39 rebound advantage to the Golden Bears (11-3, 3-0 Pac-12) who shot over 43 percent from the field and scored 42 points from inside the paint. Washington State was held to 34 percent shooting including 5-of-16 from behind-the-arc. Cooks scored 13 points and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds, junior guard Lia Galdeira added 16 points and six steals and senior guard Tia Presley finished 14 points and seven rebounds. Cal senior forward Reshanda Gray tallied game highs for 24 points and 16 rebounds.

California quickly opened the game with a 10-2 run but the Cougars settled in and rattled off six straight points. Cooks scored after grabbing an offensive rebound and going back up for the bucket, Galdeira then nailed a long two from the top of the key before Presley scored on a driving layin. Edmondson followed a Cal basket with a three that cut the Bears' lead to one but Cal answered and pushed its lead back up to six midway through the half.

Cooks came up with some big baskets for WSU in the final minutes to keep the Cougars close, scoring on a baseline drive and on another layup after grabbing an offensive rebound. Freshman guard Pinelopi Pavlopoulou brought the Beasley Coliseum crowd to life with a three from the left corner and Edmonson later followed with her second three of the half to cut the Cal lead to 29-25. Galdeira added a baseline runner before Cal closed the half with a couple baskets to own a 35-27 lead at the break.

Cal shot over 44 percent in the first 20 minutes while WSU was held to 35 percent from the floor. The Bears recorded 24 points in the paint while owning a 28-15 rebounding advantage in the first half.

The intensity picked up in the second half as physical play increased and some tempers flared as a Cal player was whistled for technical and Galdeira sank both free throws for the first points of the half. Minutes later Awa drained a three from the right wing to make it a five-point Cal lead. Cooks then followed with back-to-back buckets that cut the deficit to three at the 14:23 mark but Cal continued to go inside and score from inside the paint, notching eight straight points to push the lead back up to 11.

Washington State battled as Cooks stayed hot before Presley and Galdeira started to see some of their shots fall, cutting the Cal lead to six on a couple occasions. Senior center Shalie Dheensaw scored on a post move and Presley followed with a fastbreak layup to cut the Cal lead to 64-58 with 2:27 remaining but that's as close as the Cougars would get. Shots began to rattle out for WSU and California pulled away for good by knocking down free throws and clinched a 70-62 victory.

Washington State hosts No. 15/14 Stanford University Sunday at 1 p.m. on the Pac-12 Networks.
