Box Score WAIPAHU, Hawaii – Washington State scored three times in the second half to defeat host Hawaii 3-1 in The Outrigger Resorts Soccer Classic at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium, Sunday.
The Cougars (3-0-2) trailed the Rainbow Wahine (2-4-0) 1-0 at halftime before their offense took over in the second half.
In the 57th minute, Cara Wegner played a through ball to Beau Bremer who was being marked. The Hawaii defender tried to clear the ball, but Bremer corralled the ball and beat the goalkeeper to tie the match 1-1. The assist was Wegner's team-leading fourth of the season.
Washington State took the lead in the 72nd minute off a set piece. Susie White played a long free kick into the box. The Rainbow Wahine tried to clear, but Kaitlyn Johnson intercepted and buried a shot from inside the 18 and put the Cougars on top 2-1.
Less than four minutes later, a Mesa Owsley shot was saved, but Bremer put home the rebound for her second-career, two-goal match.
“Credit to our staff for suggesting we needed to make some halftime adjustments,” Cougar Head Coach Steve Nugent said. “I thought we controlled the ball for the first 20 minutes of the game and played really well in the second half.”
The Cougars held a 12-11 advantage in shots and a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. Washington State travels to Gonzaga, Friday at 4:30 p.m.
