Box Score CORVALLIS, Ore. – Kourtney Guetlein's goal in the in the 89th minute provided Washington State a 1-0 victory on the road against Oregon State in the Pac-12 opener for both schools, Friday.
The goal for Guetlein at 88:02 was the first of the season for the Colorado native and her second-career game-winner. The play started with Beau Bremer sending a cross into the box from the right. Mariah Powers made a dive in an attempt to put a shot on goal. Instead the ball came to Guetlein who beat Bella Geist to the far post.
“I did not expect the ball to come to me because I saw Mariah diving,” Guetlein said. “There was nothing I could do but finish the play. This was an important win for us to start Pac-12 play.”
Cougar Head Coach Steve Nugent added, “We were a much better attacking team in the second half. We did a great job of staying after an Oregon State team that made it very difficult to play. A road win in conference, no matter how you get it, is a big one.”
After an even first half (Washington State held a 6-4 advantage in shot), the Cougars (6-0-2, 1-0-0 Pac-12) bombarded the Beavers (0-7-3, 0-1-0) with 14 shots. Prior to the goal, both teams had a chance to take the lead.
In the first half, Bremer hit the near post with a chip shot from the right side. In the 68th minute, Kailiana Johnson missed a penalty kick for the Cougars after Powers was taken down in the box. Gurveen Clair was forced to make her only save in the 86th minute when she Miranda Stiver from point-blank range at the near post.
Washington State travels to the Bay Area next week to face California and Stanford.
