Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. – For the second-straight match, Washington State soccer went down a goal on the road and came back to win.
Friday, Kailiana Johnson provided the game-winner in overtime at 91:09 to keep the Cougars (4-0-2) undefeated with a 2-1 victory at Gonzaga (3-4-0).
“We created a lot of chances in the match,” Cougar Head Coach Steve Nugent said. “It was great to see Kailiana (Johnson) finish one at the end. This was an important victory for us on the road in a tough environment.”
Kourtney Guetlein assisted on the clincher with a cross from the left side that Johnson finished inside the near post. It was the 14th assist in her career, tied for sixth all-time at Washington State. Her 0.32 assists per game is a Cougar all-time best.
Washington State fell behind 1-0 in the 17th minute, but tied the match at 22:46 when Jocelyn Jeffers headed home a cross from Jordan Branch. The goal moved the senior Jeffers into a tied for eighth on the Cougar all-time goal list with 18 and into ninth place on the Washington State career point list with 45. The assist was the career-first for the freshman Branch.
The Cougars outshot the Bulldogs 20-11, including 12-5 after intermission. Washington State earned 11 corner kicks, eight in the second half, to two for Gonzaga.
Washington State takes a 12-match unbeaten streak to Idaho for a 4 p.m. match, Sunday in Moscow.
