Cougars Lose Wild Game to Gonzaga

SPOKANE, Wash. – Matt Bower's wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning allowed Caleb Wood to score the winning run and Gonzaga defeated visiting Washington State 5-4, Tuesday night.

Bower (2-1) gave up a double and issued an intentional walk to start the bottom of the ninth. After a wild pitch moved both runners up, the left-hander fanned Gonzaga (23-26) cleanup hitter Jimmy Sinatro for the first out. With a 1-0 count to Sam Brown, Bower bounced a pitch that got by Washington State (22-25) catcher P.J. Jones.

Cougar starter Kellen Camus gave up four runs on four hits and was chased after a third of an inning. Washington State chipped away at the deficit immediately with a run in the top of the second. Jones led off with a double, stole third and scored on a throwing error.

In the fourth, Yale Rosen singled with one out. After a ground ball by Jones forced Rosen at second, Patrick McGrath drilled a ball over the left-center field fence for his first-career home run to bring Washington State within a run at 4-3.

The Cougars evened the score in the fifth when Trace Tam Sing singled, moved to second on a sacrifice by Luke Stratman, and came home on a two-out single by pinch hitter Cooper Elliott, his first-career RBI.

The Bulldogs threatened to break the tie in the bottom of the fifth when they loaded the bases with no outs against Sean Hartnett, the first Cougar reliever. Sam Triece took over for Hartnett and recorded one out on one pitch before notching back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.

In the seventh, Ben Roberts tripled off the wall in right-center field, but was cut down two batters later when he tried to score on safety squeeze by Luke Stratman.

Karl Myers (2-2), the fifth Gonzaga pitcher, picked up the win with 1 1/3 innings of shutout relief.

The Cougars travel to Stanford, Friday-Sunday for a three-game Pac-12 Conference series.
