PULLMAN, Wash. – No. 47 Washington State defeated No. 70 Denver University 6-0 at Hollingberry Fieldhouse Wednesday. The Cougars claimed the doubles point 2-1 and later swept the singles matches to improve to 17-8 while Denver dropped to 9-8.
Washington State captured the opening doubles point by winning two of the three doubles matches. To determine doubles point, a tiebreaker was forced at No. 1. Elizaveta Luniza and Lize Leenknecht defeated Sonja Radosevic and Natalie Dunn 8-7 (7-5). Denver claimed the first point with a win at No. 2 when Maureen Slattery and Kathryn Hughes defeated Maria Biryukova and Olga Musilovich 8-4 but the Cougars evened things up with a win at No. 3. Charlotte Koning and Dajana Ognejenovic defeated Caroline Schnell and Michelle Garpenlov 8-7 (7-5) in the No. 3 matchup.
In singles play, Musilovich gave the Cougars the first singles point with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 4 and Luzina followed by claiming the No. 1 singles match after leading 6-4, 5-0 when Denver's Slattery was forced to retire with an injury. The Cougars added a pair of three-set victories with Biryukova claiming a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 2 and Leenknecht winning 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3. No. 6 singles was called in the first set after the Cougars clinched the overall victory.
Washington State continues its homestand Saturday, hosting No. 6 California at 9 a.m. and No. 7 Stanford at 2 p.m. Both matches are currently scheduled for the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
