PULLMAN, Wash. – Senior Olga Musilovich recorded the lone victory of the day as 47th-ranked Washington State fell to No. 6 California, 4-1, and No. 7 Stanford, 4-0, in Pac-12 conference tennis action Saturday at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts. With the losses the Cougars fall to 17-10 overall, 2-7 in conference play.
In the morning match against Cal, the Bears jumped out to a 1-0 lead by taking the first two doubles matches to finish. At No. 2, the pair of Maegan Manasse and Denise Starr defeated Maria Biryukova and Musilovich 8-2 followed by Kelly Chiu and Klara Fabikova's 8-3 win over Charlotte Koning and Dajana Ognjenovic at No. 3. With the doubles point clinched, the No. 1 match between WSU's Elizaveta Luzina and Lize Leenknecht and Cal's Anett Schutting and Lynn Chi was halted with the Cal duo leading 7-4.
In singles play the Bears quickly increased their lead to 2-0 when the 100th-rankedManasse defeated Koning 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5. The lead moved to 3-0 when Chi, ranked No. 35 nationally, defeated Leenknecht 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3.
Washington State picked up its lone point of the match when Musilovich posted a straight-set, 6-2, 6-3 win over No. 94 Fabikova at No. 4. The Bears closed out the victory following Alice Duranteau's 6-3, 6-3 win over Ognjenovic at No. 6.
With the team victory clinched, the two remaining matches on court were stopped. At No. 1, No. 72 Luzina was up a set against No. 31 Starr, leading 7-6 (2), 1-4. At No. 2 Biryukova was locked in a tight second set against No. 21 Zsofi Susanyi, trailing 3-6, 5-5.
In the nightcap against Stanford, the Cardinal secured the opening doubles point by winning at No. 2 and 3. At No. 3 Stanford's Caroline Doyle and Krista Hardebeck defeated Koning and Ognjenovic 8-1 followed by the Stanford duo of Taylor Davidson and Ellen Tsay, ranked 31st nationally, defeating Biryukova and Musilovich 8-2 to secure the team point. The top doubles match was stopped with No. 7 Kristie Ahn and Carol Zhao leading Luzina and Leenknecht 7-3.
Midway through the second set for most matches rain interrupted the action, forcing play inside. There Stanford quickly closed out the match. Hardebeck made it 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Luzina at No. 1 while Davidson made it 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Leenknecht at No. 3. The match ended when Zhao completed a 6-3, 6-2 win over Biryukova at No. 2, giving Stanford the 4-0 victory.
Three matches were still in progress when play was stopped. Musilovich led 6-1, 2-5 over Tsay at No. 4, Koning was trailing Doyle 6-3, 3-0 at No. 5 and Ognjenovic was up in the second after dropping the first, 0-6,m 3-2.
Washington State will close out its regular season Saturday when it hosts Oregon at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts. Match time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
