LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Junior Charlotte Koning posted a convincing win at No. 6 singles but it was not enough as No. 12 USC defeated No. 53 Washington State 4-1 in a Pac-12 conference tennis match Saturday afternoon at Marks Stadium. With the loss the Cougars fall to 15-7 overall, 1-4 in Pac-12 play, while the Trojans improve to 14-4, 5-0.
Doubles play began the day and in three tightly-contested matches, the Trojans pulled out two victories to secure the point. At No. 1, USC's Brynn Boren and Giuliana Olmos defeated Elizaveta Luzina and Lize Leenknecht, 8-5, followed by Gabrielle DeSimone and Zoe Scandalis' 8-6 win over Maria Biryukova and Olga Musilovich at No. 2. The third doubles match saw the Cougar duo of Charlotte Koning and Dajana Ognjenovic leading Zoe Katz and Casey Reede 7-4 when play was suspended with the doubles point already clinched.
In singles action, Koning quickly tied the match at 1 with her 6-0, 6-0 victory over Paige Keating at No. 6. USC regained the lead for good when Olmos posted a 6-0, 6-3 win over Musilovich at No. 4. Boren's 6-1, 6-1 win over Leenknecht made it 3-1 Trojans before DeSimone, ranked No. 69 nationally, defeated Biryukova 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 to seal the victory.
The remained two matches on court we stopped with the team match decided. At No. 1, Luzina, ranked No. 106, was leading No. 26 Scandalis 6-3, 2-2 while No. 90 Katz was up a set and battling in the second against Ognjenovic, 6-4, 4-4.
The Cougars are next in action Thursday when they host No.41 Pepperdine. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
