Washington State Holds On To Defeat BYU 4-3

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State women's tennis held on for a 4-3 victory over BYU Friday. Junior Charlotte Koning clinched the win for WSU with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 6 singles, the final match of the day.

Washington State raced out to a 3-0 lead after claiming the doubles point and winning the first two singles matches but Brigham Young (0-3) evened things up with three straight singles wins before Koning closed it out for WSU (6-1).

Doubles action began the day and Washington State wasted no time gaining the early advantage. On Court 2 Maria Biryukova and Olga Musilovich swept past Nicolette Tran and Toby Miclat, 6-0, in 20 minutes. Shortly thereafter Elizaveta Luzina and Lize Leenknecht clinched the doubles point with a 6-0 win over Mayci Jones and Megan Sheehan-Dizon at No. 1. The third match was stopped with BYU's Morgan Anderson and Mackenna Maddox leading Charlotte Koning and Dajana Ognjenovic, 5-3.

WSU increased its lead to 2-0 as Biryukova recorded a 6-0, 6-2 win over Anderson at No. 4. Luzina followed with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Jones at No. 1, putting WSU one victory away from the team win. The win was Luzina's team-leading 17th of the season and sixth in dual match play.

BYU earned its first win at No. 2 when Sheehan-Dizon escaped with a 7-6 (9-7), 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) victory. Beginning this season, college women's tennis plays a 10-point tiebreaker in place of a third set. In an almost identical match, Nicolette Tran cut the WSU lead to 3-2 as she jumped out early then held on for a 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 1-0 (10-8) win over Musilovich at No. 3.

Miclat evened the score at three as she rallied from a set down at No. 5 to defeat Ognjenovic, 3-6, 6-2 1-0 (10-7), setting the stage for Koning.

The Cougars continue the weekend homestand with two matches Saturday. They face UC Santa Barbara at 10:30 a.m. followed by Seattle at 6 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
