PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State swim team welcomed Seattle University to the Palouse Friday night, defeating the Redhawks, 204-58. The victory is the second-straight for the Cougars at Gibb Pool. The Cougar women swept the meet, notching first- and second-place finishes in all 14 events.
Junior Presley Wetterstrom led the Cougars with three first-place finishes in the dual. Wetterstrom took top finishes in the 100 breast (1:05.42), 200 breast (2:19.95), and 400 IM (4:29.14). The Colfax, Calif., native contributed 27 points to the Cougar total.
Junior Loree Olson took first place in the 100 back, finishing nearly two seconds ahead of fellow junior Shaya Schaedler in second place. Olson added a victory in the 200 back (2:03.58) and second-place finish in the 400 IM.
In the freestyle sprint events, freshman Hannah Bruggman took the top spots in the 50 free (23.58) and 100 free (52.49). Bruggman was supported by fellow freshman Rachel Thompson, who notched top finishes in the 200 free (1:53.67) and 500 free (5:09.11). Both freshmen contributed 18 points to the Cougars' point total.
“We're trying to swim great for ourselves,” Cougar Head Coach Tom Jager said. “I don't have a kid who doesn't want to do great. Nobody is going to back off on this team. I just let them swim and that's what happened tonight. We have a big meet tomorrow. We have to rest up and get after it again tomorrow.”
In total, seven Cougars grabbed first-place finishes against the Redhawks, including sophomore Elise Locke in the 200 fly (2:05.06), senior Ali Mand in the 100 fly (56.34), and sophomore Kendra Griffin in the 1000 free (10:29.71). Mand also added first-place finishes as part of the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay teams.
The Cougars conclude their four-meet homestand Saturday, Nov. 8 at 11 a.m. against Northern Arizona.
