SEATTLE, Wash. – In the final regatta of the fall season, the Washington State women's rowing team collected two wins and two second place finishes Sunday morning at the Head of the Lake in Seattle. The Cougars launched three varsity eight boats and two varsity four boats.
"We learned a ton every time we raced this fall," head coach Jane LaRiviere said. "The second varsity eight had a bit of a hiccup today, but otherwise great racing all around. The varsity four looked particularly strong."
The varsity four (Carter Marks, Kendall Boliba, Isabella Watt, Kayla Wakulich, coxswain – Sarah Wu) highlighted the morning with a win on the three-mile course defeating crews from Stanford University, University of Washington, Vancouver Rowing Club, University of British Columbia, Portland State University, University of Oregon, Simon Fraser University, and Seattle University. Washington State's varsity four finished in 19:53.94, nearly six seconds ahead of the second place finisher Stanford. In the same race, Washington State's second varsity four (Erin Schuster, Carly Johnson, Ella Odland, Noël Christiansen, coxswain – Julia Monroe) finished fourth with a time of 20:19.29.
Earlier in the morning, the varsity eight (Mickey Aylard, Jordan Watson, Teodora Berindei, Nicole Hare, Mollie McCabe, Ieva Adomaviciute, Morgan Cathrea, Elise Jones, coxswain - Emily Boquet) took second behind cross-state rival Washington. The Cougars finished ahead of Stanford, Gonzaga and Portland with a time of 17:42.84.
In the women's junior varsity eight race, the Washington State second varsity eight (Emily Starkel, Megan McDonald, Alex Waddell, Chloe Rogers, Katrina Tarrant, Hannah deVos, Kerry Hassall, Savannah Davison, coxswain - Rebecca Burns) also finished behind Washington for second place with a time of 18:23.59.
Washington State's third varsity eight (Kim Coon, Ashlee Bonahoom, Lori VerMurlen, JoAnne Bates, Molly Culwell, Krista Lizardi, Sarah Steger, Alyssa Rumann, coxswain - Lauren Leahy) wrapped the regatta with a win. The Cougar crew out-stroked 11 boats and finished with a time of 18:40.22.
The Cougars will face Gonzaga, Portland and Loyola Marymount to open the spring season, March 22 in Silver Lake, Wash.
