Late Goal Beats Cougars

Box Score

PULLMAN, Wash. – Katie Johnson's goal with 38 seconds left in regulation gave visiting USC a 1-0 victory over No. 19 Washington State, Sunday in Pac-12 Conference women's soccer.

Johnson won a 50-50 ball with Washington State (10-4-3, 5-4-1 Pac-12) defender Susie White in the box and then beat Gurveen Clair for her sixth goal of the season.

“I am proud of our team today,” Cougar Head Coach Steve Nugent said. “There was about a 25-minute stretch in the second half where you did not see the ball on our half of the field very much. You have to credit their (Caroline Stanley) goalkeeper. She made a couple of great saves and we came really close to putting one away.”

After a first half that saw only five shots between the teams combined, the Cougars outshot the Trojans (12-5-2, 6-4-0 Pac-12) 9-6 in the second half to finish the match with a 12-8 advantage. Washington State earned nine of its 11 corner kicks in the second half while USC garnered all three of its corner kicks after intermission.

Washington State concludes its regular season, Friday at home when arch rival Washington visits Lower Soccer Field for a 1 p.m. match.
