PULLMAN, Wash. – Junior guard Lia Galdeira scored 26 points in Washington State's 71-56 exhibition victory over visiting Central Methodist University (Mo.) at Beasley Coliseum Sunday.
WSU scored 23 points off of 28 CMU turnovers and produced a 27-9 advantage in second-chance points as 11 Cougars scored. Senior guard Tia Presley added 10 points and four steals, Galdeira added five steals and junior guard Dawnyelle Awa dished out eight assists. Junior guard Taylor Edmondson and freshman guard Caila Hailey each notched six points while freshman forward Louise Brown grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Central Methodist had three players score in double figures, led by Taylor McDowell's 18 with 15 coming on five 3-pointers in the second half. The Eagles shot 36 percent from the floor while WSU was held to 38 percent including 5-of-28 from behind the arc.
Washington State used a 10-0 run to build an early lead. Midway through the first half the Cougars built up a double-digit lead behind the 13-1 run behind three-point field goals from Galdeira and freshman guard Caila Hailey.
Galdeira caught fire late in the half, scoring nine straight points as the Cougars built a 41-18 advantage with 2:19 remaining. Galdeira led all scorers with 18 points while WSU turned 16 CMU turnovers into 15 points in the first 20 minutes.
Central Methodist traded baskets with the Cougars for much of the second half, hitting five 3-pointers and holding WSU to 33 percent shooting in the final 20 minutes that kept the game within reach. Washington State answered each CMU scoring spurt and received eight second-half points from Galdeira while taking advantage of its size down and low and recording 18 second-chance points.
Washington State will open the regular season Friday, Nov. 14 against the University of Dayton. Tipoff is schedule for 7 p.m. in Beasley Coliseum.
