Cougars Edged by Top-Ranked Bruins

Box Score

PULLMAN, Wash. – Taylor Smith scored in the 48th minute and No. 1 UCLA defeated No. 19 Washington State 1-0 in Pac-12 Conference women's soccer at Lower Soccer Field, Friday.

With the victory, the Bruins (16-0-2, 8-0-1 Pac-12) moved one step closer to clinching the Pac-12 title. Despite the loss, the Cougars (10-3-3, 5-3-1 Pac-12) remained tied with Washington for third place in the conference.

Smith's goal came after Washington State goalkeeper came off her line in attempt to smother a ball in the box. Same Mewis tipped the ball away from Clair, and then it ricocheted off of Cougar defender Susie White. The ball landed at Smith's feet and she poked it into an open net for the game-winner.

“We wanted to make it a 45 minute game and we did a good job of that,” Washington State Head Coach Steve Nugent said. “Overall, I was pleased with our performance, but we are not happy with the 1-0 result. We are not a program that lives on moral victories.”

Clair made seven saves while her counterpart, Katelyn Rowland made just one. That came in the second half when Kaitlyn Johnson tried to finish inside the near post and Rowland deflected the shot resulting in a Cougar corner kick.

Washington State is back in action, Sunday when it hosts USC. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. A live stream will be available on wsucougars.com/
