Oh Canada, Cougars Win in Berkeley!

Box Score

BERKELEY, Calif. – Chelsea Harkins picked an ideal time for her first-career goal.

The freshman from Surrey, British Columbia score in the 81st minute to give Washington State (7-0-2, 2-0-0 Pac-12) a 1-0 victory at No. 9 California (9-2-0, 1-1-0 Pac-12), Friday afternoon.

The win also broke an 18-match road winless streak against Top 25 teams and was the first for the Cougars on the road against a Top 10 team.

The game-winner came after Kourtney Guetlein's cross into the box resulted in a shot by Cara Wegner that hit the crossbar. Harkins was there for the rebound and put it home to give the Cougars their first win in Berkeley since 2001 and only their second all-time. The assist was a team-leading fifth for Wegner.

“Thank you to the Cougar fans who came out today,” Washington State Head Coach Steve Nugent said. “The flags were flying and we had a lot of support. We made some adjustments and took control of some things in the second half. I am proud of all the players that got on the field today. We played a lot of people today. Give credit to Chelsea (Harkins) for putting herself in position and find the back of the net.”

Washington State held a 10-6 advantage in shots, including 7-3 in the second half. California had two shots on goal in the match, both in the first half, and they were cleared off the line by a Cougar defender each time. Washington State generated eight corner kicks to the five for the Golden Bears.

The Cougars travel to No. 3 Stanford, Sunday at 1 p.m. for a match that will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
