Box Score BOULDER, Colo. – Kaitlyn Johnson scored in the second half and No. 24 Washington State posted a come-from-behind 2-1 victory at Colorado in Pac-12 Conference women's soccer, Friday.
In the 50th minute, Kailiana Johnson played a ball to Kourtney Guetlein who fed Kaitlyn Johnson in the box. The sophomore from Torrance, Calif., beat Colorado (10-6-0, 3-4-0 Pac-12) goalkeeper Kate Scheele for the game-winner. The assist for Guetlein was the 15th of her career and moved her into a tie for fifth place all-time at Washington State (9-2-3, 4-2-1 Pac-12).
“This is a big win because it comes on the road in the Pac-12,” Cougar Head Coach Steve Nugent said. “Our front three, in any combination, played its best soccer of the season.”
After Brie Hooks gave the Buffaloes a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute, the Cougars answered in the 41st minute on Cara Wegner's first goal of the season. Lianna Simms played a ball to Jocelyn Jeffers out of the back and Jeffers slotted a beautiful through ball to Wegner who ran onto it in the box and beat Scheele inside the back post. It was the first-career point for Simms, a redshirt-freshman making her collegiate debut.
With the victory, Washington State improved to 6-1-1 on the road this season and 4-1-0 all-time against Colorado.
Washington State plays its final Pac-12 road match of the season, Sunday at Utah, Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. Mountain/noon Pacific.
